If you're moving into or out of an apartment in Kelowna or West Kelowna, it can be a different animal than moving from a townhouse or a house.
We've helped a lot of people through apartment moves here in Kelowna, downtown high-rises, Glenmore walk-ups, newer buildings in the Mission and Downtown, and older complexes in Rutland. We started to see patterns, the same stress points and oftentimes they catch you off guard.
Apartment moves are usually smaller with less contents to move. They are tighter - tighter hallways, tighter timelines and often tighter rules, making them a bit tricky at times.
First: The Elevator (It's Almost Always About the Elevator)
What surprises a lot of people is how much the elevator dictates your move. In many of Kelowna's condo and apartment buildings, you have to book the elevator in advance. Sometimes it's a 2 hour window, sometimes 4, sometimes you get the freight elevator, sometimes you don't get anything.
If you miss your time slow, you're not just inconveniences, you're waiting, or worse, you're rescheduling. I've seen moves where someone thought, "We'll just grab the elevator when it's free." That works in small buildings, it doesn't work in downtown towers on a weekend.
One thing to watch for: some buildings require proof of insurance from your movers. Some require damage deposits for the elevator. Some won't let you prop doors open unless there's someone there to monitor it. You don't want to find that out the morning of your move.
My advice is call you building manager early. Ask:
It could take 5-10 minutes but save a lot of headache and money if you're paying movers by the hour.
Parking in Kelowna Isn't Always Simple
Downtown Kelowna and parts of the Pandosy area can be awkward for truck access. A common issue I see is people assuming the moving truck can just "park out front." Not always, there may be a loading zone, or it's metered parking, or it's a narrow hallway. Unfortunately, they often don't think about tenants moving needs when they design the building and parking areas.
If a truck has to park half a block away, that adds real time. And time equals money if you're paying hourly for professional movers. In many cases, reserving a loading spot through the city (if available) or talking to strata about temporary access makes a big difference.
Measure Before You Move - Not During
This one seems obvious, but you'd be surprised. Sectionals are the biggest offender. Big comfortable couches that fit perfectly in your last place suddenly won't fit in the elevator or make the corner turn in a third floor unit in Glenmore. What surprises a lot of people is that stairwells in older Kelowna buildings can be very narrow with tight 90 degree turns, low ceilings and short landings.
If you don't measure:
I've had customers standing in a hallway saying, "Well, I guess we're buying a new one." And they're begging the building manager to allow them to keep the couch in the lobby until it's sold on Facebook Marketplace.
Measure the doorway width. Measure the hallways. Measure your furniture. It's not exciting but it saves time and real frustration. In the event that we can't get a couch on an elevator, or down a hallway or into an apartment unit we try to come up with a creative solution.
The "It's Just a Small Apartment" Trap
In many cases, people underestimate how much stuff they’ve accumulated.
You might be in a one-bedroom, but if you’ve lived there five years? Closets are full. Storage locker is packed. Kitchen cupboards are deeper than you think.
A common issue I see is people booking too little time because “it’s only 800 square feet.” Square footage doesn’t move, furniture and boxes do. Underestimating leads to rushed packing and stressed timelines. If you’re hiring movers, be honest with yourself about:
Packing for Apartments Is Different
When you move from a house, you usually have a garage to stage boxes. In an apartment, space is tight. Boxes pile up quickly. Elevators get cluttered. Hallways get blocked, and before you know if you're overwhelmed with stuff everywhere.
One thing to watch for: don’t stack boxes in the hallway days before your move. Neighbours complain. Strata notices. Fire codes get involved. Pack in phases. Keep walkways clear. Also, protect your floors and many buildings require it. Even if they don’t, scratched hallway floors are expensive.
Walk-Ups Are Their Own Category
Kelowna still has plenty of older three-story buildings with no elevators. Third-floor walk-ups in July heat? That’s real work. There’s a tradeoff here. Hiring help costs money. Doing it yourself costs your back.
I’ve seen people try to save a few hundred dollars and end up with strained shoulders and dented drywall. If you’ve got heavy furniture and tight stairs, sometimes hiring experienced help isn’t about convenience, it’s about preventing damage.
Move-In Timing Matters More Than You Think
A lot of apartment leases in Kelowna turn over at the end of the month, and occasionally the middle of the month.
That means:
If you can move mid-month, it’s usually calmer and sometimes more affordable.
That’s not always possible, of course. But if you have flexibility, it’s worth considering.
Damage Deposits: Think Ahead
Apartment moves are where scuffs happen. Tight corners. Metal bed frames. Sharp table legs. In many cases, damage isn’t from carelessness, it’s from tight space and awkward angles. Protect corners. Wrap furniture properly. Remove legs from couches if needed.
Downsizing Into an Apartment? Be Realistic
If you’re moving from a house into an apartment, which happens a lot here in Kelowna, the biggest stress isn’t the move itself. It’s letting go of space. What surprises a lot of people is how different 900 square feet feels after living in 2,500.
In many cases, I recommend decluttering before you move, not after. Trying to “figure it out later” inside a smaller apartment creates clutter and stress. Be honest about what fits your new lifestyle. Not everything needs to come with you.
When DIY Makes Sense, And When It Doesn't
If you’re:
DIY can absolutely work.
If you’re:
Professional help often pays for itself in reduced stress and speed. It’s not about luxury. It’s about logistics.
Final Thoughts
Apartment moves in Kelowna aren’t impossible. They just require more coordination than people expect.
Elevators.
Parking.

Strata rules.
Timing windows.

And after helping dozens of people through this, I can say this confidently: The smooth apartment moves aren’t the ones with the fewest boxes. They’re the ones where someone planned for the small details no one sees coming.
